WEIGHT MANAGEMENT FOR A HEALTHIER YOU IN 2022

What Causes Weight Gain?

Is it as simple as what we put in our mouths vs output of energy?

When it comes to weight management, input vs output is definitely the place to start. If your calorie consumption isn't equal to or less than the calories you're burning over a prolonged period of time, you will put on weight. It really is as simple as that. However, choosing the best options for the calories you're consuming will be key to feeling better and making healthy changes that will last a lifetime.

A good way to get a basic understanding of your own habits is to write down your daily input and types of food vs the exercise you do. Be honest with yourself, this list is for your eyes only.

Some Useful Weight Loss Tips

Stay Hydrated

Being well hydrated is the first step in weight management.

Increasing your water intake by having a glass of water before meals and alcohol/sugary drinks is the first thing I recommend when clients/customers are not drinking enough water.

By doing this you slow down and lessen the intake of the bad foods. When you are hydrated with your water your body will crave less of other things too.

Healthy Hint: Talking about cravings, if you get sugar cravings (usually around 3pm and after dinner) think about first drinking a glass of water or try the trace mineral Chromium. Great for supporting those constant sugar levels in your blood.

Limit Unnecessary Sugars

Sugary, refined foods will not help your body's wellbeing or capacity so that is the main area we should target. Sugary and refined foods are high in calories but low in nutrients, also known as 'empty calories'. Empty calories offer very little in terms of nutrition and can cause weight gain and low energy as our bodies are incorrectly fueled, which leads us to eat more and more of what we don't need. It's a nasty cycle. It doesn't help that our brains get confused and think that sugar is wonderful.

Ask yourself: How many refined sugary drinks are you drinking? Are there hidden sugars in your breakfast cereal?

Knowledge is key to good choices.

Read the ingredients and become more aware of the things you are eating and that will help target things to cut out. A great rule of thumb is to choose foods that are as close as possible to their natural forms. Eg, a fresh apple is better than a dried apple, a potato is better than a chip, a raw peanut is better than a roasted salted peanut, whole grain bread or pasta is better than white, etc.

Summer is such a great time of year to start cutting sugary and processed foods, as we naturally reach for healthy salads and water over pies or soft drinks.

A lot of these drinks can be perceived as healthy when labeled as things like “Sports” drinks.

Make sure to check the label to know what you're really drinking.

Reduce Portion Size

Decrease the size of your meals. Often times when cooking or plating up before eating its easy to serve more than you need, By cutting down the amount you're eating can have a huge difference in the number of calories you are consuming, and can also mean you don't have to miss out on your favourites - just eat less of them.

Healthy Hint: A great tip is to try using a smaller plate. The first way this can help is by giving you a smaller area if you are used to filling up your plate. But a less known reason is the same portion size on a smaller plate can trick your brain into thinking you feel fuller faster.

Chew Food Longer

When a person takes time to chew their food, they will take a longer time to finish their meal. People who eat slowly tend to eat less. As people eat, the brain gets the message to indicate that they are getting full. If you chew your meals too fast, you may be done with your food, but the brain still thinks that you are hungry. When this occurs, you are likely to eat more and consume more calories, which can lead to weight gain.
